How to request a loan from DAVFP, or make a Submission

Requesting a loan from DAVFP:

DAVFP will loan specimens to Universities and Research Institutes. Loan requests will be accepted only from institutions with appropriate facilities for storage of herbarium specimens. Such institutions must accept responsibility for the safe custody and return of the loaned material. All specimens are to be stored in insect-proof cabinets and treated carefully. Specimens should remain in their protective packages except during actual examination. Unless otherwise arranged, loan durations will be 6 months.

Loan requests may be submitted by mail or e-mail and should include the following information:

  1. The name and institute affiliation of the researcher
  2. Reason for borrowing the material
  3. The names, host names, and DAVFP numbers (available on-line) of the specimens requested. If the DAVFP number of a requested specimen is unknown, the request will be greatly facilitated by supplying synonyms, bibliographic information, and any known collection data.

Address all loan correspondence to:

Curator, DAVFP
Forest Pathology Herbarium
Pacific Forestry Centre
506 West Burnside Rd, Victoria, BC

DNA extraction from DAVFP specimens:

The herbarium curator will make decisions regarding destructive sampling for DNA extraction on a case-by-case basis. If approved, DNA extraction results, including GenBank database accession numbers, should be sent to the DAVFP curator, so that the information can be added to the PFC Herbarium Accession Database.

How to submit herbarium specimens to DAVFP for accession to the collection.

Prior to sending specimens, please contact the curator by written mail or email request, so that the curator is able to approve the specimen submission(s). If large numbers of specimens are approved for submission to DAVFP, the curator will request that the person submitting the specimens enter accompanying collection data via the Herbarium Management System.

Please do not use the Herbarium Management System to submit unidentified forest pathology samples for disease diagnosis. Refer instead to the section on "How to Collect Forest Disease Specimens" for pathology identification request forms and protocols.
