DAVFP Collections Database

Search hints

The database has been designed so that the searcher selects from lists instead of filling in forms. This reduces the chance of missing data due to typographical errors.

To start a new search, the searcher first chooses one of the following search parameters on which to base the search:

  • Fungus Name (based on the first letter of the fungus Genus)
  • Host Name (based on the first letter of the host Genus)
  • Other Pests/Damage (categories such as abiotic factor, bacteria, animal damage, etc.)
  • Collector (based on the first letter of the collector’s name)
  • Determiner (based on the first letter of the person who identified the organism)
  • Location Name (based on the first letter of the nearest post office, town, or landmark)
  • Locality Code No. (provincial regions roughly based on old drainage divisions – see map PDF provided in this section (under development))
  • DAVFP Voucher Number
  • Year of Collection

Once the parameter has been chosen, and the selection within the parameter has been made, the searcher can choose to order the data report by clicking one of the following categories:

  • Year
  • DAVFP Number
  • Locality
  • Fungus/Other
  • Host, Latin
  • Host, Common

The report will be generated when the searcher clicks on the “SUBMIT” button.

Search results containing the information on each DAVFP Collection will be displayed in the order requested.

Examples of different types of searches and their results:

  1. Choosing “Fungus Name”, “Host Name”, “Collector”, “ Determiner” or “Location Name” will result in the generation of an alphabet selection screen.

The database has been designed so that the searcher selects from lists instead of filling in forms. This reduces the chance of missing data due to typographical errors.

For example, when searching by “Fungus Name”:

    • Choose the box with the first letter of the Fungus Genus Name (i.e. “P” for Peniophora decorticans Burt).

    • Click on the “CONTINUE” button.

    • A window containing all the specimens with the Genus Name beginning with “P” will be displayed.

    • Select the fungus that you would like to have all the collections displayed by scrolling through the window and clicking on its name.

    • By clicking on the appropriate circle, you may have the resulting data sorted by one of the following parameters:
      • Year
      • DAVFP Number
      • Locality
      • Fungus/Other
      • Host, Latin
      • Host, Common

    • Click on the “SUBMIT” button

    • Search results containing the following information on each DAVFP Collection will be displayed in the order requested:

      1. DAVFP: 3439
      Fungus: Peniophora decorticans Burt
      Accession Code: 489039501
      Host, Common name: broadleaf maple
      Host, Latin: Acer macrophyllum
      Date: 06/21/1948
      CFS UTM code: 1042541
      Map Coords: 48.83°N 124.09°W
      Collector: W.G. Ziller
      Determiner: H.S. Jackson
      Location: Cowichan Lake, V.I., B.C.

    • If the searcher wishes to view the locations of the specimens on a map of British Columbia, a click on the “MAP LOCATIONS” button at the bottom of the report will generate a map.

    • Clicking the “BACK” button will allow the searcher to select another Fungus Name beginning with “P”. Clicking the “START A NEW SEARCH” will permit the selection of a completely new search parameter to search with.
  2. Choosing “Other Pests/Damage” will generate a screen displaying categories of “Alternate Queries” such as “Abiotic factor”. By selecting one of these categories, the searcher is provided with a subject selection window. After one of the subjects has been selected, the searcher again has the option to choose the order in which the results are displayed. Click the “SUBMIT” button to generate the DAVFP Collections report.

  3. Choosing “Locality Number” will generate a screen containing a box to be filled with a known locality number. A second option is to request a list of all known locality numbers, then select the needed number. Locality numbers represent provincial polygons roughly based on drainage divisions that are now obsolete. However, this function remains useful for generating species lists within these polygons. For example, if a searcher selects a polygon known to encompass a particular provincial park, this category can be used to create a rough species list for the park. A map of the provincial drainage divisions can be viewed by clicking on the provided PDF link (under development). A paper copy of this map is available by contacting DAVFP.

  4. Choosing “DAVFP Voucher Number” or “Year of Collection” generates a screen containing a box to be filled with a known Voucher Number or Collection Year. A second option is to request a list of all DAVFP voucher numbers or all collection years, then select the needed number or year Be warned that the voucher number list is huge, over 500k).
